With the government yet to announce replacements for governors of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh, Shivraj Patil and Urmila Singh, President Pranab Mukherjee on Friday asked Haryana Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki to take additional charge of Punjab and act as administrator for the Union Territory of Chandigarh, as Patil is leaving his office on Monday.

The President has also asked Rajasthan Governor Kalyan Singh to take additional charge of Himachal Pradesh, as Singh demits office on January 24.

Both Patil and Singh are appointees of the previous UPA government and are leaving office on completion of their respective tenures.

With Mizoram Governor Aziz Qureshi the last UPA-appointed man still in his position, the departures of UPA appointees in various Raj Bhavans have almost given way for the NDA appointees.

Qureshi had approached the Supreme Court against the Centre’s moves to remove him.
Last year, Union Home Secretary Anil Goswami called Qureshi and other governors to tender their resignations.
