Om Prakash, a former chief of the Karnataka police, was allegedly murdered by his wife at their home in Bengaluru on Sunday. He was 68.

Preliminary investigations suggest that Om Prakash got into an argument with his wife, Pallavi, during lunch around 4 pm on the ground floor of their three-storeyed home in HSR Layout.

The altercation escalated quickly. Police say Pallavi overpowered him, assaulted him with her bare hands and then stabbed him with two knives, at least six times in the neck and back of the head.

While this case has sent shockwaves in the entire state, this is not the first time when cops met a violent end to their lives, away from duty.

December 13, 2024: Bengaluru cop blames wife and father-in-law in suicide note

A 33-year-old policeman in Bengaluru was found dead on railway tracks near Baiyappanahalli on the city’s outskirts. The deceased Tippanna Alugur, who was a head constable at the Hulimavu police station in southeastern Bengaluru, blamed his wife Parvathi (24) and father-in-law Yamanappa (49) for his death, officials said, adding that death by suicide was suspected after his mangled body was recovered at night. “I am ending my life after being fed up with harassment by my wife,” Alugur claimed in the note accessed by DH.

“My father-in-law has issued threats to my life. On December 12, at 7.16 pm, he [father-in-law] spoke with me on the phone for 14.25 minutes and issued threats," the note further read.

Unable to deal with the loss of his wife to cancer, Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Shiladitya Chetia killed himself ten minutes after his partner breathed her last.

Chetia, who was serving as Secretary, home and political department, in the Assam government, shot himself at the back of his head with his service pistol after his wife died after battling terminal brain cancer for the past few months.

December 30, 2023: Wife, in-laws kill cop; daughter present at crime scene

A 42-year-old Delhi police constable was reportedly beaten to death by his wife, father and brother-in-law while his daughter allegedly stood and watched.

"Together they punched, kicked, and even hit my son with sticks till he collapsed on the floor unconscious. They then alerted the local police and took him to a private hospital in Noida, but he was already dead by that time," the victim's father was quoted as saying by The Times of India.

The fight that took place after the couple got into a spat left Ramveer Singh with 20 internal injuries, as per his autopsy report.

November 13, 2023: Police inspector shot dead outside house in Lucknow

Satish Kumar was shot dead outside his house when he, his wife, and 10-year-old daughter were returning home around 2 am after dinner at a relative's house. As their car reached home, Kumar allegedly stepped out of the vehicle to open the door when a man allegedly shot him.

October 4, 2023: ACP Anil Sisodia killed himself after wife's death

Assistant Commissioner of Police Anil Sisodia took his own life by allegedly shooting himself at his residence after his wife's demise.

It was reported that Sisodia, who shot himself with his own revolver was "depressed" after his wife passed away three days ago.

July 24, 2023: Bharat Gaikwad murder-suicide case

A 57-year-old Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) allegedly shot dead his wife and nephew with a gun before shooting himself fatally at his home in Maharashtra's Pune city.

The incident took place at around 3:30 am at ACP Bharat Gaikwad's bungalow in Baner area.

Gaikwad was posted as ACP in Amaravati and had come home, according to police.

July 7, 2023: Tamil Nadu-cadre IPS officer's 'suicide'

In a tragic incident, a senior Tamil Nadu-cadre IPS officer allegedly killed himself using his gunman’s pistol at his official residence in Coimbatore on Friday morning. Forty-five-year-old C Vijayakumar, a 2009 IPS officer, was serving as deputy inspector general of police (Coimbatore range).

Preliminary reports suggest that Vijayakumar shot himself due to personal reasons and he was under depression for the past few months.

A Arun, Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), who rushed to Coimbatore, said he was diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and was under medication. “He was taking tablets for depression,” the ADGP said.
