After a surge in Covid-19 cases, the Delhi Government on Friday announced that all schools in the national capital will remain closed for all classes till further orders.

"Due to rising cases of Covid-19, schools in Delhi will remain closed for all classes till further orders," Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced on Friday.

Last week, the state government had announced that students of any classes will not be called to schools in the new academic session. However, class 10 and class 12 students who are due to appear in board exams in May-June were going to school with the consent of their parents.

Delhi had recorded 7,437 Covid-19 cases Thursday, the highest single-day surge this year, while 24 more people had died due to the coronavirus infection, taking the death toll to 11,157.

Separately, the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Friday directed officials to "be vigilant and take all necessary measures" in order to control the spread of coronavirus infection on the campus. There are 27 active cases of Covid-19, including 24 students on the campus. Since the outbreak of the pandemic, the central university has recorded 281 cases and five deaths among staff, family members of staffers and pensioners.
