BJP MP Giriraj Singh on Thursday said that Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma's move to ban beef in the state wouldn't have been needed had Nehru banned it in 1947.

"It is very unfortunate that the misdeed was done Nehruji. Had Nehru done it in 1947, (Assam CM) Hemant Biswa Sarma would not have done it now," he said.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Wednesday that the state Cabinet has passed a resolution to ban the sale of beef in restaurants, hotels, and public places. A meeting of the state Cabinet was held in Delhi earlier that day.

Last month, Giriraj, while commenting on the mosque rows in Uttar Pradesh had said that Hindus have the right to approach courts and seek survey of mosques because it is a truth that many of them were built on ruins of temples demolished by Mughal invaders, Union minister Giriraj Singh said on Thursday.

He also said Hindus would not have to knock on the courts' doors seeking relief had former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru taken steps to end such disputes after Independence.
