Two deaths in Cachar in South Assam and central Assam's Nagaon district increased the toll due to floods and landslides to 19. One person remained missing in Cachar district.

According to the daily flood bulletin issued by Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) on Wednesday evening, the number of flood-hit people increased to 6.7 lakh in 21 districts (out of 35). The figure was 6.3 lakh on Tuesday. The bulletin said 1,494 villages remained inundated while 41,317 people were provided shelter in 405 relief camps.

The bulletin said at least nine rivers including the Brahmaputra and the Barak were flowing above the danger levels on Wednesday.

Kaziranga inundated

Parts of Kaziranga National Park in Assam, the biggest home for one-horned rhinos, was inundated forcing the wild animals to move towards the hills in neighbouring Karbi Anglong district. Wild elephants, rhinos, deers, buffalos were seen crossing the highway that passed through the 1,300sqkm park, for highlands.

Manipur situation

In Manipur, the security forces, including the Army and Assam Rifles and other agencies continued rescue efforts in Imphal East and Imphal West districts as the flood situation in the Valley remained unchanged. The state disaster management department said 4,097 flood-hit people were evacuated on Wednesday, while 82 relief camps were operational.

Manipur has remained under the President's Rule due to the conflict involving the Meitei and the Kuki communities since May 2023. A large number of people, who were displaced due to the conflict, have been living in relief camps.

Flood and landslides triggered by heavy rains since May 31 across the Northeast led to death of 44 persons and resulted in displacement of many others. Communication on several roads across the region including some highways has remained snapped due to landslides following heavy rains.
