He added that further cuts in power rates will be announced later in the year.

For all categories of domestic consumers, including Jeevan Dhara and high tension (HT), electricity charges will be reduced by Re 1 per kWh, officials said.

The decrease will be by Re 0.25 per kWh for all other categories of customers, they added.

"It’s April – temperatures will increase but your bijli bill will decrease," Sarma said in a post on X.

"Beginning today, families in Assam will see a drop of Re 1 per unit in electricity bills along with a rebate at the end of the year," he said.

"PS: This isn’t an April Fool Prank," the chief minister said, adding a smiling emoji to his post.

The slash in power tariff was proposed in the state annual budget, which was passed in the Assembly last month.

Sarma had also indicated earlier that rates will dip further towards the end of the year.
