The bodies of the insurgents were found following a gun battle between them and a joint team of Assam Police and Assam Rifles.

The forces launched a drive after the militants served an extortion demand to National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), engaged in implementing of the Golden Quadrilateral, a national highway project in Dima Hasao.

The firing took place at a place called Hera Kilo N.Kubin, under Haflong police station. The forces found two AK series rifles and a pistol, Assam police said on Tuesday.

The highway project was started years ago but the implementation in Dima Hasao has remained slow due to extortion demands by the insurgent groups. Dima Hasao shares boundary with Nagaland, where the NSCN has their bases.

The incident came two days after three cadres of another faction of the NSCN were similarly killed in Arunachal Pradesh's Longding district. The forces launched the operation on Sunday after the insurgents abducted two construction workers on April 25. One of the abducted workers was also rescued during the operation by the army and Assam Rifles.
