The revelation made by V K Saraswat, scientific adviser to the defence minister, came three years after China stunned the world with its A-Sat test in 2007.

In the controversial test, Beijing destroyed FENGYUN 1C satellite at an altitude of 865 km, using one of its ballistic missiles. The test, however, led to a global uproar as it revived fears on space war and militarisation of space.

“We are building the capabilities for an anti-satellite system to take care of rogue satellites,” Saraswat said at the Science Congress.

The DRDO was making the building blocks for launching such a weapon, its sensors and command and control systems as part of its ballistic missile defence system.
