BBMP polls can be held on a Sunday: SC
DHNS

Taking up a Special Leave Petition (SLP) filed by the Karnataka Government, the Bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justices S H Kapadia and Aftab Alam remarked that election can be held on a Sunday, in response to the State’s plea for postponement citing school examinations, availability of teachers and school buildings.

Taking a view against postponement of the elections, the Bench observed that there was no reason why the poll should be deferred as the process for the ward-wise reservation system was on and would be completed shortly.  Senior advocate Mukul Rohtagi representing the State Election Commission said the poll panel was ready to complete the polls as per the High Court direction.

Lawyers Laxmi Narayan and Sharad Takur, representing former Mayor M Ramesh, who opposed the government petition, said that the Government was giving trivial reasons to postpone the polls. The Bench posted the matter to February 22 for further hearing.
