The West Bengal CID has arrested a man for allegedly duping people for several years by posing as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s secretary.

The accused Tapas Banerjee was arrested on December 31, the CID said in a statement on Tuesday.

“The Nabadwip Police Station in Nadia district received a written complaint from Tarun Gourhari Das of the International Society of Krishna Consciousness (ISCON) stating that one person named Tapas Banerjee used to visit ISCON at Mayaour (in Nadia) frequently and introduced himself as the CM’s secretary,” the CID said in a statement.

According to CID officials, the complainant further alleged that the accused claimed that he will soon be posted as the District Magistrate of Nadia.

“Believing him (the accused), ISCON offered several facilities to him. Also, a few devotees invested in his so called projects and land matters,” the CID said. The accused used to travel in a car fitted with a blue beacon, the officials added.

Banerjee has been booked under several sections of the IPC including, 420 (cheating), 419 (cheating by impersonation) and 406 (criminal breach of trust).
