The World Economic Forum (WEF) has endorsed a ranking of Bengaluru city as the most dynamic city in the world, beating the United States’ Silicon Valley.
India also snatched the lead from China as home to some of the world’s fastest-changing cities, taking six of the top 30.
The WEF tweeted: "These are the most dynamic cities in the world-and they are not the one's you would expect".
Hyderabad secured the fifth place in the list, a place above London. Pune (13) rose above New York and Paris, Chennai (18) beat San Francisco as Delhi (23) and Mumbai (25) secured a position much above Los Angeles and Stockholm. Ho Chi Minh City of Vietnam sprung another surprise by grabbing the second spot and pushing Silicon Valley to the third.
The forum noted that though dynamic cities are spread throughout the world, more than half of the top 30 in the 2017 rankings were in Asia-Pacific.
“India snatched the lead from China as home to some of the world’s fastest-changing cities, taking six of the top 30, compared with China’s five. The overriding factors that characterise the world’s most dynamic cities are technology and innovation — and cities that best absorb, adapt and leverage these drivers come out on top,” the WEF said in a brief note.
Key factors
Besides the use of technology, the key factors that contribute to the rank include liveability, affordability, space, environment and housing.
Global geopolitics, marked by nationalism and protectionism, have also been considered.
HK loses out
Affordability and space constraints in San Francisco (21) contributed to knocking that city out of the top 20 for the first time and Hong Kong out of the top 30.
