Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday attacked Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for certain comments made during the 'Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra', including one related to the 'Gamocha', (scarf or hand towel), a symbol of the culture and identity of the state.

The Congress 'Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra,' led by Rahul Gandhi, is slated to enter West Bengal from Assam on Thursday, amid political ripples within the INDIA bloc alliance in the state.

The Bengal leg of the Yatra will begin a day after Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee's announcement that her party will contest the upcoming Lok Sabha polls independently in West Bengal.

Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra to enter Bengal from Assam today

Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra led by Rahul Gandhi is set to enter West Bengal from Assam today. It will enter West Bengal through Bakshirhat in Cooch Behar district in the northern part of the state. After the handover of the flag, the Yatra will head towards Khagrabari Chowk in the district, where Gandhi will address a public meeting.

Gandhi is scheduled to lead a padayatra from Maa Bhawani Chowk in Cooch Behar town later in the day. The Yatra will then continue by bus before reaching Falakata in Alipurduar district for an overnight halt.

Following a two-day break on January 26-27, the Yatra will navigate through Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, Uttar Dinajpur, and Darjeeling districts before entering Bihar on January 29.

The Koch Rajbongshi people are currently classified as an OBC community, but they are demanding to be given ST status.  When the Prime Minister visited the state 10 years ago, he assured them that they would get special category status in 6 months. They continue to wait a decade later. Rahul ji listened to the delegation and reassured them that a full national caste census would give a clear picture of their numbers and socio-economic status.

Concluding the Assam leg, the national flag has been handed over to the West Bengal PCC.

On the twelfth day of Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, we have entered West Bengal. We are going through Cooch Behar, from Cooch Behar to Alipurduar, then Jalpaiguri, then Darjeeling, then Uttar Dinajpur, Malda, Murshidabad, Birbhum and then we will go to Jharkhand. Totally, we will spend 5.5 days in West Bengal," says Congress leader Jairam Ramesh.

Yatra to resume after a two-day break

The Yatra led by Gandhi, which began on January 14 from Manipur, entered the Coochbehar district of West Bengal from Assam in the morning. It will resume after a two-day break with CPI(M) also expected to join. Trinamool Congress has distanced itself from the Yatra though.
