The police recovered admit cards of six examinees from the mobile of Dr Ranjit Kumar, one of the prime accused, who used to charge Rs 8 lakh to Rs 10 lakh for placing imposters in place of original candidates. The imposters, mostly well qualified MBBS students, were given Rs 2.5 lakh to 5 lakh for appearing in the examination in place of original examinees, who were relatively weak in studies.

Notably, Dr Ranjit is posted as the government doctor in Begusarai jail but was on leave since April 3. He was produced before the magistrate on May 5 who remanded him to 14 days of judicial custody.

Assisting him in this forgery was Ram Babu Mallik, a former Class IV employee of Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital (DMCH). Ram Babu too has been arrested and remanded to judicial custody.

Explaining the modus operandi, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sanjay Kumar Pandey said Dr Ranjit used to identify such weak candidates who needed imposters in lieu of money. Ram Babu’s prime responsibility was to arrange the imposters, mostly MBBS students or 'scholars', who would appear as proxy in lieu of money.

“We got an input that two suspicious persons were sitting in a car near the examination centre at Mohanpur Bridge. The two were identified as Dr Ranjit and Ram Babu. A car (registered in the name of Ram Babu), Rs 50,000 in cash and three mobiles were recovered from them. Admit cards of six examinees were also recovered from their phones. They were brought to the police station, questioned and detained after they confessed to the crime,” said the ASP.

Dr Ranjit revealed to the police that he used to charge half of the amount before the examination and the remaining half after the result.

Meanwhile, the Economics Offences Unit (EOU) in Bihar arrested one SK Faiz from Araria after it was found that he was collecting money from candidates to provide them with question papers of NEET exam. “Investigation is on. More arrests are likely in this forgery case,” said DIG, Economics Offences Unit, MS Dhillon.
