Nearly 14 polling centres, two schools torched in Bangladesh ahead of general elections.

Bangladesh goes to poll amid boycott by main Opposition BNP

Bangladeshis on Sunday began voting in the general elections expected to be won by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the absence of the main Opposition BNP which is boycotting it.

Voting began at 8 am local time and will continue till 5 pm.

A total of 119.6 million registered voters are eligible to vote at Sunday's polls in more than 42,000 polling stations, according to the country’s Election Commission.

Believe 'brotherly relation' with India will continue: Bangladesh Home Minister

As Bangladesh votes in the 2024 general polls today, the country's Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan said, "...I am confident (of winning) because we did many things. The people love Sheikh Hasina."

On BNP boycotting the election, he said, "...The leadership of BNP has become very crucial and they are taking decisions against people's will..."

He also said, "...We have received support from the inception of Bangladesh...I know what cooperation we received from India. So, we believe that this type of brotherly relation will continue."
