Germany's defence minister resigns amid criticism on modernisation, Ukraine

German Defence Minister Christine Lambrecht has resigned following persistent criticism of her handling of military modernisation programs and the country's arms deliveries to Ukraine.

Lambrecht said in a statement on Monday that she had submitted her resignation request to Chancellor Olaf Scholz, saying that “months of media focus on my person” had stood in the way of a factual debate about the military and Germany's security policy.

“The valuable work of the soldiers and many people in my department must stand in the foreground,” she said. - AP.

SC dismisses BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain's plea against HC order for FIR over alleged rape

The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a plea by BJP leader and former union minister Syed Shahnawaz Hussain challenging the Delhi High Court order for registration of an FIR against him on a woman's complaint alleging rape.

"Let's there be a fair investigation and, if there is nothing, it will exonerate you," a bench of Justices S Ravindra Bhat and Dipankar Datta told the counsel appearing for Hussain.

Senior advocates Mukul Rohatgi and Siddharth Luthra, appearing for Hussain, told the bench that complaints after complaints were filed by the complainant woman against the politician. - PTI.

Reliance suspends gas auction

Reliance Industries Ltd and its partner bp plc on Monday suspended a planned auction for sale of natural gas from their KG-D6 block following changes in gas marketing rules, the firms said in a notice.

E-bidding for sale of 6 million standard cubic meters per day of gas was to happen on January 18.

"It is hereby notified that the current bidding process is suspended till further notice," the two firms said in a notice on Monday.

It did not give the reason for the suspension but industry sources said this follows the government bringing out new rules that limit the margin that could be charged on sale of natural gas. - PTI.

Six persons killed in two accidents in MP

Six persons were killed in two separate road accidents in Madhya Pradesh's Singrauli and Khandwa districts, police said on Monday.

In Singrauli, two speeding motorcycles collided head-on near Basnia village on Sunday evening. Three persons died on the spot, while another person succumbed to injuries on way to hospital, Chitrangi police station in-charge D N Raj said.

In another accident in Khandwa district, two friends riding a motorcycle were killed after their two-wheeler collided with a truck on Mooni-Sanwad road at around 7 pm on Sunday, Mundi police station in-charge Brajbhushan Hirve said. - PTI.

Cold wave sweeps Delhi; minimum temperature plunges to 1.4 degrees

A punishing cold wave swept Delhi on Monday morning with the minimum temperature at the Safdarjung observatory, the city's base station, plunging to 1.4 degrees Celsius, the lowest in the month since January 1, 2021.

The weather station at Lodhi Road, where the India Meteorological Department (IMD) headquarter is located, recorded a minimum temperature of 1.6 degrees Celsius.

The IMD had earlier issued an orange warning for cold wave in Delhi till January 17-18. - PTI.
