Special meeting for civic budget to be held on Mar 28: MCD

A special meeting has been convened at the MCD headquarters on March 28 to discuss and deliberate on the civic budget, officials said on Saturday. As required by norms, the civic budget is to be cleared by March 31.The MCD passed the "schedule of taxes" in the civic budget for 2023-24 on February 15.But, the remaining budget process was stalled as the standing committee of the civic body is yet to be elected.The Municipal Corporation of Delhi is "exploring options" to have the remainder of the civic budget cleared by March 31, official sources said on Friday.

Pope extends sex abuse law to cover lay leaders

Pope Francis on Saturday extended a 2019 law to fight sexual abuse in the Church by making lay Catholic leaders responsible for acts committed under their watch in Vatican-approved bodies.

A letter, directly sent by the pontiff, also said that vulnerable adults can be victims of predator priests -- adding the vulnerability clause.

The earlier version had only spoken of minors and vulnerable persons. "The updated text specifies that 'the lay faithful who are or have been moderators of international associations of the faithful recognised or created by the Holy See (are responsible) for acts committed' while they were in office", the Vatican said in a statement.

Two arrested for attempting to rob Russian tourist in Goa

Two persons were arrested on Saturday for allegedly trying to rob a Russian national in a hotel room.

According to North Goa Superintendent of Police Nidhin Valsan, complainant Aigul Davletianova, 30, Russian national, staying at Grand Inn hotel in Morjim, Pernem-Goa, said on March 24, two unknown persons entered into her room through slanting window, and when she woke up, the accused persons caught hold of her hands and pressed her mouth due to which she sustained injuries to her lips and her one tooth got uprooted.

At least 19 dead in Mississippi tornado, storms: ABC News

At least 19 people were killed when a tornado and severe storms swept through the US state of Mississippi late Friday, authorities told ABC News. Search and rescue operations were underway in Sharkey and Humphreys counties, about 70 miles (110 kilometers) north of state capital Jackson, the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) said, according to ABC.

"Many in the (Mississippi) Delta need your prayer and God's protection tonight," Governor Tate Reeves said on Twitter. "We have activated medical support -- surging more ambulances and other emergency assets for those affected. Search and rescue is active," he added, warning residents to "watch weather reports and stay cautious."
