Bunty Chor, the famous thief of the North who is wanted in 500 cases, has struck South India for the first time.
Bunty Chor alias Devindra Singh broke into an NRI’s house in Thiruvananthapuram on early hours of Monday and stole a brand new Rs 27 lakh Outlander car, a high-end mobile, a laptop, a gold ring and Rs 2,000 in cash.
He broke through the surveillance security to get inside the house.
Since police could not identify the thief, they released his picture captured by a hidden camera at the house of the NRI.
They received several messages on Tuesday from North Indian states identifying him.
The police said that Singh who had been staying at a hotel for the last few days arrived at the house on an Esteem car bearing Karnataka registration lifted from the city.
He jumped inside the compound wall, reached the house and removed the bullet-proof planks off the front door.
He entered the house and opened the remote-controlled front gate using the device found in the room. Before leaving he destroyed two of the six hidden CCTV cameras installed at the house.
He also switched off the burglar-alarm.
The police suspect that he may have left Kerala by now. Though it is said that he was spotted in Kanyakumari, police did not confirm it.
Hailing from Delhi, the police said, the 40-year-old Singh ran a private-detective firm. Winding it up, he started theft. He steals only luxury cars, limited edition watches and other costly items and believes in single-handed operation.
Known for slipping from police custody, he was booked in nearly 500 cases in the north, but was arrested only a few times.
