Centre may change highway toll policy

Facing widespread criticism for allowing road developers to collect toll charges even before completing projects, the Ministry of Highway and Road Transport is likely to review the existing user-fee-collecting policy.

The ministry has also decided to do away with the clause of “provisional completion”, where developers were allowed to charge toll after a highway was 75 per cent complete.

The ministry wants toll to be collected particularly in highway expansion projects—four lanes or four-to-six lanes—only after 100 per cent completion of the expansion work.
