The Centre has decided to rope in National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) and Power Grid Corporation to provide electricity to Andhra Pradesh as several parts of the state are reeling under darkness following strike by employees of state electricity companies.
“We are doing something. NTPC and the Power Grid will provide electricity to Andhra Pradesh,” Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde told reporters here when asked about the government’s plan to restore electricity in the Seemandhra region in Andhra Pradesh.
The Ministry of Power, which has been closely monitoring the situation, has started supplying additional an 1,300 mw power from the national grid to the state from Wednesday to restore the emergency services.
However, the ministry ruled out any threat to the southern grid due to the continued strike by power employees.
“There is no threat to the southern grid,” he said, adding, All the power generating units of the central public sector undertaking located in Andhra Pradesh are functioning without any hitch,” Union Power Secretary P K Sinha told Deccan Herald.
The Centre is monitoring the situation and will help Andhra Pradesh in this crises, he said.
The Seemandhra region has been witnessing massive protests following the October 3 decision of the Union Cabinet to create Telangana state.
Electricity generation has been affected at major power stations, including the Vijayawada thermal power station and the Rayalaseema thermal power unit, forcing authorities to impose power cuts ranging between three and 10 hours.
