The State Medical Education Minister S A Ramdas told Deccan Herald here that the regulatory body agreed to consider renewing the recognition of five new colleges and increase the intake in three old government run medical collages after the government agreed to give an undertaking that all deficiencies in these colleges would be addressed.
The Minister, who met Union Health Minister Gulam Nabi Azad and officials of MCI on this issue here on Wednesday, said both the Union Minister and the MCI had assured that a positive announcement in this regard would be made next Tuesday.
The State government is likely to set a fresh seat matrix, incorporating these 700 seats, on Thursday . These seats are expected to be offered to students in the second round of counseling, beginning August 4.
Five colleges in Karnataka- Mandya, Hassan, Shimoga, Bidar and Raichur medical colleges, awaiting renewal of recognition, will get 100 MBBS seats each. Three colleges waiting to get MCI stamp for increasing their intake are-Bangalore Medical College (from 150 seats to 250 seats), Bellary Medical College ( from 100 to 150 seats) and Mysore Medical College (from 100 to 150 seats).
Ramdas also said a meeting with private medical colleges had been convened on Thursday in Bangalore. He said he was hopeful of getting around 150 MBBS seats for CET counseling. These seats, too, would be offered to the students in the second counseling, he said.
