Oommen Chandy on Friday resigned as Chief Minister of Kerala in the wake of the defeat of the Congress-led UDF in the May 16 Assembly election.

The UDF won only 47 of the state’s 140 Assembly constituencies while the CPM-led Left secured 91. Chandy has maintained that as chairman of the UDF, he had to take a big share of the responsibility of the loss. Later, addressing staff of the state secretariat, he said achievements of the government he led were the result of a “joint effort”.
