The Supreme Court on Monday upheld the ban order on cock fight imposed by the High Court of Judicature at Hyderabad in December.
While banning the practice, prevalent in East and West Godavari districts, the Hyderabad court had asked the district collectors and superintendents of police to ensure no such events take place.
According to a statement released by Gauri Maulekhi of People for Animals, New Delhi, the Chief Justice of India on Monday ordered status quo on the judgment by the High Court of Judicature at Hyderabad regarding cock fights, thereby sustaining the ban on all such fights.
However, the Hyderabad court has been asked to review its order in the light of a 2014 Supreme Court judgment in Animal Welfare Board of India vs A Nagaraja & Others case, which bans all animal fights, races and so forth.
When the chief justice dictated the order for the Hyderabad court to review its order, senior counsel Anand Grover submitted that this would in effect mean that cock fights will resume.
