Coldplay has set a new record for the highest attendance in a single tour, surpassing Taylor Swift's Eras Tour. They set the record with their Music of Spheres World Tour, selling over 10.3 million tickets.
However Swift's tours continues to hold the record for the highest-grossing tour with a revenue of $2,077,618,725. Coldplay still has a chance to beat this record before their tour ends in September 2025.
The India leg of Coldplay's tour provided a boost to their record setting attendance. They played three shows in Mumbai at DY Patil Sports Stadium on January 18, 19 and 21.
They went on to perform in Ahmedabad at the Narendra Modi Stadium on January 25 and 26. With more than 2,30,000 fans in attendance each night, it became the largest stadium show in the 21st Century.
Expressing their appreciation and gratitude, Coldplay on social media stated, "Thank you Ahmedabad, thank you India. We'll never forget these two weeks. Your love and kindness will stay with us forever."
They went on to say, “Playing live and finding connection with people is ultimately why we exist as a band. We’ve been planning this tour for years, and we’re super excited to play songs from across our whole time together.”
Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned the band in his speech reflecting on the growing trend of live events in India.
"In the past decade, both the trend and demand for live events have grown. In the last few days, you must have seen the magnificent images from the Coldplay concerts held in Mumbai and Ahmedabad. It is a testimony of the scope of live concerts in India," said Modi.
The Music of the Spheres album which was released in 2021, rose to the Number 1 spot on the UK charts in just two weeks, playing a key role in the tour's commercial success.
They began their tour in March 2022 in Costa Rica. Coldplay is scheduled to perform in Hong Kong in April, followed by Seoul before heading to the United States.
According to a report by the Economic Times, the band said they have not broken the all time record for the largest single concert crowd. The position is held by Italian singer Vasco Rossi with a record of 2,25,000 at his 2017 concert in Italy. The band also mentioned the legendary Rob Stewart's 1994 concert in Rio de Jeneiro which was attended by 3.5 million people.
Just behind Taylor Swift's Eras Tour, Coldplay's Music of the Spheres tour currently holds the second-highest gross of all time. However, with more performances scheduled till September, Coldplay may overtake Swift's $2.08 billion record and take the top spot as the highest-grossing tour in music history.
