Rioters went on the rampage torching a police outpost, several vehicles, buildings and shops in the old city areas of Dus Sarai and  Galshaheed.

Some senior officials, including a circle inspector, was reportedly injured, prompting the authorities to clamp down indefinite curfew in six police station areas.

Violence broke out  on Tuesday night following arguments between “kanwaria” (devotees who offer holy water on Shivalingas) pilgrims and members of Muslim community about a procession route.

Taking exception to the sudden change of route by authorities, “Kanwarias” resorted to stone throwing. Members of the two communities, involved in stone throwing and firing, also fought pitched battles with security personnel, sources said.

Educational institutions will remain closed till further orders.  “The situation is now under control,” special director general of police Brijlal said.
