The Congress has decided not to play favourites in the ongoing power struggle within the AIADMK even as it eyes to gain a foothold in Tamil Nadu.

After conflicting statements from senior leaders Ahmed Patel and P Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu Congress chief Su Thirunavukkarasar on Friday met party vice president Rahul Gandhi to discuss the unfolding situation in the AIADMK where Sasikala and Chief Minister O Pannerselvam are locked in a power struggle.

On Thursday, Patel had questioned Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao’s absence from Chennai, thereby delaying the swearing-in of Sasikala as the chief minister after she was elected legislature party leader by the AIADMK legislators.

Thirunavukkarasar’s views are similar to Patel’s, but Chidambaram has spoken in favour of the governor’s “discretion” as Sasikala lacks political experience and faces serious financial allegations.

Besides Thirunavukkarasar, Chidambaram was also present at the meeting with Rahul. He counselled Rahul against any haste, particularly when the Supreme Court is set to deliver its judgement on a disproportionate assets case involving Sasikala.
