After a crushing defeat, Congress president Sonia Gandhi has set in motion the process of consultation with party workers from across the country to revamp the organisation.
The immediate tasks before the Congress, party leaders said, was to prevent further erosion of support in states such as Maharashtra and Haryana which will go to polls later this year.
A senior AICC functionary said the Congress president has been meeting party workers and leaders in her bid to try and understand the reasons for the humiliation the electorate heaped on the party in the recent Lok Sabha elections.
“Soniaji is meeting leaders individually as well as in delegations. About 10 to 15 such meeting are being held daily,” he said adding that vice president Rahul Gandhi is also meeting party workers.
The Congress Working Committee, which held a meeting on May 19, had authorised the party president to take “whatever steps necessary in order to revamp the party organisation at all levels”.
“There could be a reshuffle in the party organisation after the brief session of the Parliament,” a senior Congress leader said.
Besides understanding the reasons for the defeat, Gandhi also has to play the role of a referee to quell in infighting that has broken out in several state unit.
