Months after the party’s humiliating defeat, Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday said the process of rebuilding public confidence has begun with its work in Parliament.
Addressing a meeting of the Congress, Gandhi stressed on the need to play the role of a vigilant opposition and resist the authoritarian and sectarian tendencies of the new government as it tries to get its way in Parliament. “This we have begun to do, I believe, with increasing effectiveness,” she said.
Congress members have used their superior numbers in the Rajya Sabha to force the Modi government to refer the Insurance Laws (Amendment) Bill to a Select Committee, press for changes in the Bill that seeks to scrap the collegium system to appoint judges and make the government discuss the Gaza issue in Parliament.
