New Delhi: A total 46 people filed nominations for the September 9 Vice Presidential elections but the returning officer rejected papers of all but two. These candidates together had filed 68 sets of nominations.
An official statement said 28 nomination papers filed by 19 candidates were summarily rejected as they did not provide a certified copy of the entry relating to the candidate in the electoral roll for the Parliamentary constituency in which the candidate is registered as an elector or filed after the last date of nominations.
The remaining 40 nominations of 27 candidates were taken for scrutiny on Friday and 32 papers of 25 people were rejected for not having the required number of 20 each MPs as proposers and seconders or due to not depositing Rs 15,000 as security deposit.
Returning Officer PC Mody, who is the Rajya Sabha Secretary General, found the nomination papers of NDA candidate CP Radhakrishnan and Opposition candidate Justice B Sudershan Reddy as valid. Both had submitted four sets of nomination papers each and all of them have been accepted.
The last date of withdrawal is August 25.
