Even as doors on the Congress-CPM alliance seems all closed, most of the 18 CPM state committee members have put in their lot with the proposed tie-up and will approve it during the party meeting on February 12-13.

It is the upcoming politburo and central committee meetings later this month where Bengal leaders are likely to face resistance. Insiders informed that CPM state unit will put up a united front before the party’s two highest decision-making bodies and pledge allegiance to the idea of an alliance with the Congress for the forthcoming Assembly elections.

The politburo and central committee meetings are scheduled to take place at Delhi from February 16 to 19. Sources informed that apprehending resistance from former party general secretary Prakash Karat, who still holds considerable sway over both the top bodies, leaders have already started drumming up support in favour of their proposal.
