Curfew was imposed on the sensitive Madannapet and Saidabad police station limits of the city following incidents group violence.
Exam-going students have been exempted from the purview of curfew.
Trouble broke out around 8 am on Sunday after locals reportedly found “meat” near a religious place in the Kurumaguda area.
While three persons were admitted to Osmania Hospital with stab wounds, around 12 were injured in the clashes that continued till noon. A few two-wheelers were burnt and window panes of houses and cars smashed.
The APSRTC authorities have suspended operations of city buses to Saidabad and surrounding localities after 19 buses were damaged..
Police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the mob. “Miscreants also pelted stones at buses and set at least two vehicles on fire. Two incidents of stabbing have also been reported,” police said.
According to Hyderabad Police Commissioner A K Khan, additional forces have been deployed in the disturbed area. He added that police have picked or questioning two persons for allegedly instigating the clashes.
“The situation is now under control. We have posted pickets and preventive measures are in place,” Khan said. “We are keeping strict watch in the sensitive areas,” he told reporters, appealing to the people to cooperate with the police.
Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Kirankumar Reddy and Home Minister and DGP Dinesh Reddy reviewed the situation and asked the police to act against anyone trying to aggravate the situation in the communally sensitive city.
After almost two years of peace, the old city woke up to communal tension once again on Sunday.
It was in March 2010, when 13 people including two journalists were injured in communal clashes in Moosa Bowli, Hussaini Alam, Purana Pul, Begum Bazar and surrounding areas in the old city.
