Supreme Court judge Justice Dipak Misra has approached the Delhi Police after receiving a hand-written letter left in an envelope outside his house which claimed he would be killed for his decision in the case of 1993 Bombay bombings convict Yakub Memon. “We have reached Delhi. You will not be spared even if you increase your security,” said the letter.
The Delhi Police deployed special weapons and tactics (SWAT) commandos on the spot late on Wednesday. They said they are yet to identify the letter's source and confirm its authenticity. “It is unlikely to be a prank,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Vijay Singh.
A security guard on patrol at the rear gates of the judge’s house found the letter and informed his seniors, who approached the Tughlaq Road police station.
A case under Sections 506 (criminal intimidation) and 507 (criminal intimidation by anonymous communication) of the Indian Penal Code has been filed on the basis of a security officer’s statement. The statement of security personnel as well as other staff at the house have been recorded.
Senior police officers, including Singh, visited the judge’s house and reviewed the security arrangements.
Given where the letter was found, the police suspect the accused was aware of the area. The house's rear side is not frequently patrolled by security guards or covered by CCTV cameras.
