Delhiites woke up to a think blanket of fog on Wednesday with temperatures dropping to 11 degrees Celsius and disrupting flight and train operations. At least 81 trains were delayed by several hours, six were cancelled, and 51 rescheduled due to dense fog resulting in poor visibility in the national capital. Several trains, which were scheduled for Thursday, have also been cancelled.

According to Railway authorities, trains which were running late include Punjab Mail, Gareeb Rath, Himgiri Express, Amarnath Express, Purbia Express, Kaifiyat Express, Avadh-Assam Express and more. Moreover, 38 departing flights were delayed due to poor visibility at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA). At IGIA, from 5 AM to 9:30 AM, the visibility dropped to below 50 metres, improving to 50 metres at 10 AM and to 300 metres at 10:30 AM.

According to weather department forecast, Delhi will be under a blanket of thick fog this whole week. According to an official of the MeT Department, the visibility recorded was 100 metres at 5:30 AM and 8:30 AM at Safdarjung observatory and zero at 5:30 AM at Palam observatory. It improved to 800 and 600 metres at both places respectively at 5:30 PM.

The minimum temperature recorded was 11.2 degrees Celsius, two notches above normal for this part of the year and the maximum was 24.3 degrees Celsius. The humidity oscillated between 100 and 65%. The weather department has predicted dense to very dense fog on Thursday.

Flight diverted
Due to the foggy condition in Delhi, scores of Air India passengers were left high and dry after their flight was diverted and landed in Jaipur. The passengers were on-board Air India Flight 541, on Muscat-Delhi-Hyderabad route. According to an airport official, "Passengers boarded the flight in Muscat and landed in Jaipur at 4:30 am." The passengers remained on-board  for about six hours at Jaipur airport. Later, the airport authority asked passengers to deboard and kept them waiting at the Airport's transit lounge for a couple of hours. Families with small children and passengers with medical condition suffered due to the delay. Trains and buses travelling from Delhi to Jaipur also reached an hour late due to the foggy weather.
