The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Thursday issued notices to the Tamil Nadu government in a case of medical negligence involving a woman, who was initially declared pregnant, but eight months later was told she had a tumour

.

The commission, which took suo motu cognizance of the report, has taken a serious view of the incident and issued notices to the secretary (health department), government of Tamil Nadu and director, Kasturi Bai Government General Maternity Hospital, Chennai. It sought reports within two weeks.

According to the case records, a 28-year-old woman went to the hospital for confirming pregnancy in April, 2016. After she was checked and declared pregnant, the woman visited the hospital frequently for review.

The “mother-to-be” was also given a tentative delivery date eight months later on November 8, 2016. She was put on  medication for the development of the foetus. When she did not experience labour pain even after the due date, she went to the hospital and a scan was done. The scan report showed a “baby”. She returned home and on November 21, developed severe pain. She was again rushed to hospital and a fresh scan was done. It was then learnt that she was not pregnant and had a small tumour.
