Dekal, a forensic surgeon at the Royapettah Government Hospital, however, told reporters on Monday that his resignation had nothing to do with Batcha’s death.
However, the Tamil Nadu Government has rejected the resignation of Dekal, citing shortage of doctors.
Though reports of his resignation came days after the death of Batcha on Wednesday, Dekal said he had put in his papers on March 3 as he had intended to contest the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
“I resigned because I wanted to contest the elections as an independent. This is in no way related to the case,” he said and added that he would attend the court, whenever required.
The doctor said he was yet to make up his mind to contest the Assembly elections since his relieving orders were yet to come.
Dekal conducted autopsy on Thursday, a day after Bacha was found hanging inside his house at Teynampet in the city. Though he was rushed to the Appolo hospital, where he was declared 'brought dead'.
Preliminary reports indicated that his death was due to asphyxia.
Interestingly, Dekal’s announcement came a day after an upcountry magazine in its website on Sunday raised questions about the manner in which Batcha’s postmortem was conducted. But, police sources in Chennai maintained that it was done strictly as per procedures.
Batcha, whose official and residential premises were raided by the CBI in connection with the 2G spectrum allocation case, was reportedly under pressure to turn an approver.
