The ‘widespread misuse’ of a painkiller in poll-bound Punjab has kept the Narcotic Control Bureau (NCB) on its toes. Authorities have been apprehensive about the misuse of opioid-based painkiller, Tramadol, as a drug by addicts.
A record haul of over seven lakh Tramadol tablets was seized in Hoshiarpur from a pharmaceuticals stockist. The raid was conducted by the NCB. There are concerns that this painkiller is fast replacing other forms of drugs like poppy husk, especially in rural and suburban areas in this border state. Tramadol is a high-intensity painkiller used to reduce severe pain.
Letter to drug controller
In the run-up to the polls, the NCB shot off a letter to the state drug controller urging him to monitor the production, dispatch and use of the medicine. An action plan submitted to the election commission also makes a mention of this opioid-based drug. During the raid by the NCB, nearly 84,000 tablets of tablets Alprazolam and Chlordiazepoxide were also seized.
