The Election Commission on Thursday said voters in three poll-bound constituencies in Tamil Nadu will not be permitted to exercise their franchise if their left index finger is marked with indelible ink.
The poll panel’s announcement came a day after some banks in the state applied the ink on the left index finger of those seeking to exchange the scrapped currency
notes.
Aravakurichi, Thanjavur and Thiruparankundram are scheduled to go to polls on Saturday, with more than five lakh people eligible to vote.
As per instructions from the Union government, indelible ink has been applied on the right index finger of those exchanging notes in Tamil Nadu to prevent multiple cash withdrawals.
Banks in these three places are expected to use the ink from Friday. Chief electoral officer Rajesh Lakhoni said people were not eligible to vote if their left index finger was inked.
