Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief and Chief Minister in waiting Mehbooba Mufti on Sunday broke down inconsolably at her father’s grave on the fourth day customary mourning ceremony at Dara-Shikoh Park in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
Eyewitnesses told Deccan Herald that emotional scenes were witnessed at Mufti Mohammad Sayeed’s grave as Mehbooba’s mother-Gulshan Mufti , two younger sisters Rubaya and Mehmooda and brother Tassaduk were seen consoling each other.
Mufti passed away on Thursday morning at AIIMS in New Delhi.
Clad in a black cloak and blue scarf, Mehbooba lead the bereaved family towards the grave at around 11:00 am.
She was seen sitting beside the grave of her father weeping alongside her mother, Gulshan, eyewitnesses said.
In grief
Begum Mufti’s brother and senior PDP leader Sartaj Madni were trying to console the bereaved family.
Later Mehbooba along with other family members stood–raising their hands for prayers as local religious leader Zi-ul-Haq Nizami prayed for the peace of the departed soul.
BJP leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh also turned up for the occasion.
Senior functionaries and top officers of the state government including Chief Secretary, B R Sharma, Financial Commissioner, B B Vyas and Director General of Police, K Rajendra Kumar were also present.
Mehbooba Mufti later accepted condolence from the people and party workers and waved to them from the podium and left for Srinagar.
The park where Mufti Sayeed is laid to rest is same where he started his political career and used to organise workers’ meeting during his days with Democratic National Conference (DNC) and later Congress.
