An unidentified militant was killed while two army soldiers were injured in an ongoing encounter between security forces and ultras in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Saturday.

“Baramulla Encounter Update: 1 terrorist killed. Search going on. Further details shall follow,” Kashmir Zone Police tweeted.

Reports said the gunfight broke out in Wanigam Bala village of Baramulla after security forces launched a cordon-and-search-operation (CASO) following ‘specific’ inputs about the presence of militants in the area.

As the security forces approached the suspected spot, the hiding militants opened fire, which was retaliated, triggering off a gun fight in which one ultra was killed, police said.

Two army soldiers and a policeman were also reportedly injured in the gunfight which was going on.

This year over 120 militants, including Pakistanis have been killed in different encounters with security forces. The police said that the majority of those killed so far this year belonged to Lashkar-e-Toiba, and JeM.

Over 40 militants who died this year so far were fresh recruits and were killed within the first three months of joining the militant ranks.
