Thiruvananthapuram: Environmentalist Pandurang Hegde has been presented the inaugural M P Veerendra Kumar memorial national thought leadership award for his widely acclaimed work against deforestation through the Appiko movement.
Water conservationist and Magsaysay award winner Rajendra Singh presented the award that carried a citation, plaque, and a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh at a function to commemorate the fifth death anniversary of writer and politician M P Veerendra Kumar.
Hedge announced that he would be sharing the prize money with the members of Prakurti, an environmental organisation based in Sirsi, Uttara Kannada, which works on conservation of the Western Ghats.
