A special exam will be conducted for those students of the National Institutes of Technology (NIT) Srinagar, who would not be able to attend the examinations scheduled to start next week.
The decision has been taken by the HRD Minister Smriti Irani as many of the outstation students wanted to go home following tension in the campus due to a clash over Indian cricket team’s loss against West Indies in the T20 World Cup last week.
The HRD minister is also the chairperson of the NIT council.
“Majority of the students want to appear in the examination as scheduled. But there (many) are students who want to take their examination later. So an option will be given to such students. Special examination will be conducted for those wanting to appear later,” a ministry official said.
The ministry on Thursday sent a three-member team to diffuse the tension at NIT campus.
Many of the outstation students told the team that they wanted to go back home fearing clash.
While the ministry’s team has been directed to stay there till March 11, the HRD minister is likely to visit the campus on April 13 to take stock of the situation, an official said.
“We will not let any injustice happen to students,” Irani said on Wednesday in her response to the police crackdown on the outstation students.
The minister also hoped that Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti would order a probe into the incident and fix responsibility of those involved.
Home Minister Rajnath Singh also assured the students that the Centre will not let them “suffer any more harm.” “I have spoken to Mehbooba Mufti ji over telephone. After taking stock of the situation and issuing necessary directions (to the officials concerned), she called me back and said there was no need to worry. She assured me that all students will be safe,” Singh said.
