The Gandhi family scion’s remarks came in response to a query during an interaction with students at a programme organised by the Congress’s student wing, National Students Union of India (NSUI), here.
According to the students who attended the programme, Rahul said he would have been still “struggling like you” (ordinary students) if he had not had the family background. The Congress leader, on a visit here to “ speak directly” to the student community after similar exercises in Varanasi and Allahabad on Monday, faced tough questions from them. The students, however, were unimpressed with his answers on issues like inflation, corruption, lack of education facilities, reservation and unemployment. Participants in the 45-minute interaction noted that Rahul was not forthcoming on these issues.
The media was not allowed inside. Rahul exhorted youth to join active politics. “Politics is not only about contesting in the elections. It is about becoming aware also,” he told the students. He blamed the Mayawati government for lack of facilities for primary education. “After all, you (students) have elected this government,” he said in response to a query in this regard.
