Two people were killed and eight injured after a fire broke out at the refinery complex of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) in Gujarat’s Jamnagar district on Thursday.
“There was an unfortunate flash fire in one of the units under a planned maintenance shutdown in our DTA (domestic tariff area) refinery at Jamnagar. While the Reliance fire brigade extinguished the fire swiftly, it resulted in injuries to some contract workers, who are being provided necessary medical treatment,” the company said in a statement, adding, “All the operations of the refinery continue to be normal.”
The fire broke out around 3 am at the company’s fluid catalytic cracking unit (FCCU), a petrol-making unit, at the older 6,60,000-barrels per day (bpd) refinery, which was under maintenance. RIL has two refineries at Jamnagar, which have a joint capacity to process 1.2 million bpd of crude oil. The part of the refinery where the fire broke out was in the DTA of the refinery site. The second 5,40,000 bpd refinery is located in the special economic zone of the refinery site.
While some of the injured were rushed to the Jamnagar civil hospital, four were sent to a private hospital. Visuals of the victims beamed on local television channels showed that they were being treated for burns.
