Former DMK minister Samayanallur S Selvaraj passed away at a private hospital here on Sunday evening. He was 66 and is survived by two daughters and a son.

Selvaraj, who had been ailing for some months owing to a kidney problem, is the second former DMK minister to die in the last few days after the party lost its Salem veteran Veerapandi S Arumugam.

Selvaraj, a dalit representative who was earlier elected from the Samayanallur constituency in Madurai district to the Tamil Nadu Assembly, had served as minister for Adi Dravidar Welfare, Hill Tribes and Bonded Labour in the erstwhile DMK ministry during 1996-2001.

Party president M Karunanidhi visited the hospital on Sunday night and paid tributes to the deceased minister.
