Mumbai: In a major intelligence-based operation, four Naxalites including a Dalam commander were gunned down by elite C-60 commando unit of Anti-Naxalite Operations of Maharashtra Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in the forests of Gadchiroli district.

Among the slain Naxalites are two women.

The deceased were identified as Sunnu Masa Pungati (35), Ashok alias Suresh Paria Wedde (38), Vijayo Hoyami (25) and Karuna alias Mamita alias Tuni Pandu Varse (21).

All the Maoists, who were gunned down in the two-day operation, were from the Bhamragad dalam.

Collectively, they carried a reward of Rs 14 lakh on their heads.

The joint operation was launched following information about the presence of the Naxalites in Kawanda-Nalgonda area, the operation was launched along the banks of the Indravati River along the Maharashtra-Chhattisgarh border.

The firing continued for several hours.

The police parties seized an automatic self-loading rifle, two 303 rifles, a Bharmar gun, walkie talkies, camping material and Naxal literature, among other items, were recovered from the spot.
