Rare furniture items that were purchased at a “throwaway” price from French architect Le Corbusier who designed Chandigarh, will go under the hammer at an auction at Chicago in the US on June 11.
Prominent auction house, Wright will be conducting it. The furniture that is up for grabs was designed by Pierre Jeanneret, cousin of Le Corbusier, and was purchased from the capital city Chandigarh between 1999 and 2005. Pairs of lounge chairs are expected to fetch anywhere in excess of $10,000.
There is also a sofa set that will go under the hammer. The sofa set was bought by French dealer Eric Touchaleaume at an auction held at the Punjab and Haryana HC between 2001 and 2005. It is expected to get over $30,000.
In 2011, auction house Wright went ahead with the auction despite protests by the Chandigarh administration. The auction house said that all the items had been sourced from various government departments in Chandigarh, including Punjab and Haryana HC, administrative buildings, Chandigarh College of Architecture and the PGI.
