The ruling TRS in Telangana on Friday emerged as the single largest party in the 150-ward Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) election, winning 55 wards.
While the election was held for 150 wards, the results of 149 were announced as counting of votes had to be stopped in a ward as per a High Court order.
BJP bagged 48 wards and the AIMIM of Asaduddin Owaisi secured 44. Congress could win only two wards.
Counting had to be stopped in Neredmet ward as marks other than the standard Swastik symbol (crossed arrow mark) were in majority.
The Telangana High Court on Friday suspended a circular issued by the State Election Commission (SEC), which allows counting of votes with "distinguish marks" other than the standard Swastik symbol (crossed arrow mark) for the GHMC polls held on December 1.

Lauding its "astounding" performance in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) polls, where it has made big gains, as a "moral victory", the BJP on Friday said it has emerged as the "only alternative" to the ruling TRS in Telangana.
BJP leaders hailed the party's show as it won 46 seats, against only four it had earlier in the corporation, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah thanking people for reposing faith in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "politics of development."

The TRS, which swept the 2016 GHMC polls seizing 99 out of 150 wards and looked firmly positioned throughout the day to repeat the feat, was by Friday evening left searching for options to retain the Hyderabad mayor chair.
"The historic result for BJP in Hyderabad GHMC elections shows people's unequivocal support towards PM Modi's
development & governance model. I want to thank the people of Hyderabad," says JP Nadda, President of Bharatiya Janata Party.
"The people of Hyderabad have made it clear what will be the results of the Telangana assembly elections (2023). I can say with confidence that people of Telangana have decided to say goodbye to the corrupt KCR government," he told ANI.
"Gratitude to the people of Telangana for reposing faith in PM @narendramodi led BJP’s Politics of Development. Congratulations to Shri @JPNadda ji and Shri @bandisanjay_bjp for BJP’s astounding performance in GHMC. I applaud the hard work of our karyakartas of @BJP4Telangana," tweeted Amit Shah.
Backed by a high-octane campaign involving its top guns, the BJP on Friday made significant electoral inroads here in the fiercely contested GHMC polls, almost giving a scare to the ruling TRS, which just managed to retain control of the civic body it won four years ago.
BJP's resurgent performance prompted the state leadership to describe it as a "saffron strike", while party in-charge Bhupendar Yadav said it has now emerged as the "only alternative" to the K Chandrasekhar Rao-led regional dispensation with people accepting Prime Minister Narendra Modi's brand of good governance.
Out of the 150 wards in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) that went to the polls on December 1, the results of 146 wards were available till reports last came, where TRS won 56, while the BJP bagged 46, followed by AIMIM (42) and Congress, which has so far managed to win two seats.

"TRS had 99 seats in Hyderabad, this has come down to 55 now. We had 4 seats and we have won 50 as of now. The number of seats of AIMIM has also gone down, the same goes for TRS. BJP has today emerged as a strong party," said MoS (Home) G Kishan Reddy.
"Today's results indicate that we have blessings of the people in our efforts to bring BJP govt in Telangana in 2023 elections. TRS has failed, people are against their dynasty rule & corruption. People have paved a way for a BJP govt in Telangana, in the days to come," he told ANI.
The Congress was a distant third, winning just two seats. The TRS was leading in at least 15 other wards, while the BJP was ahead in about 25 seats. The BJP's performance, if the present trend holds, leading to the saffron party possibly netting a significant number of seats, will be seen as a massive improvement against its 2016 show of winning just four seats, in alliance with the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) then.
Earlier some Returning Officers asked the SEC what they should do in case they find some "distinguish mark" instead of Swastik symbol on any ballot paper.
The ruling TRS looked all set to retain control of the city civic body, winning 41 of the 150 seats so far, while BJP's high profile campaign appeared to have paid off, with the party winning 22.
The Asaduddin Owaisi-led AIMIM continued its dominance in its traditional stronghold of the old city of Hyderabad, winning 34, as per the latest trends following counting of votes for the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) polls, held on December 1.
The Congress was a distant fourth, winning just two seats. The TRS was leading in at least 15 other wards, while the BJP was ahead in about 25 seats.

Telangana High Court on Friday suspended a circular issued by the State Election Commission (SEC) which allows counting of votes with "distinguish marks" other than the standard Swastik symbol (crossed arrow mark), for the polls held for Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation on December 1.
Hearing a House Motion, Justice Abhishek Reddy while suspending SEC's circular said the ballots which have "distinguish marks" should be kept separately and if they are detrimental to the poll results, the outcome should not be announced.

TRS is winning in most seats. As voting was by paper ballot we have to wait 3-4 hours to get exact numbers. I believe BJP numbers will further decline & heavy support for TRS will surface. We'll have our mayor & do public works uninterrupted: TRS leader K Kavitha on GHMC Election.
Telangana High Court on Friday suspended a circular issued by the State Election Commission (SEC) which allows counting of votes with "distinguish marks" other than the standard Swastik symbol (crossed arrow mark), for the polls held for Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation on December 1.
The BJP was leading over its rivals in postal ballots which were taken up first in the counting of votes on Friday in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections.
The BJP is leading in around 80 wards while the ruling TRS is ahead in around 20.
However, the party lead position would be known as the votes cast in the ballot boxes are counted.
JUST IN | AIMIM leader and former Mayor, Mohammed Majid Hussain, wins from Mehdipatnam Ward.
The GHMC has a total of 150 wards, each represented by a councillor/corporator. While polls for the 149 wards were held on Tuesday, a re-poll was conducted in Old Malakpet on Thursday.Pollsofthis one ward were canceled midway as it was found that CPI(M)'s symbol was printed on the ballot papers instead oftheCPI's.
The BJP could win anywhere between 25 to 35 seats, most of the surveys predict. The least that any projection gave to the saffron party is 12 seats.
The striking point however is the dramatic rise of the BJP's influence in the city, where it was confined to only four wards five years back.
The latest civic body polls were held two months ahead of the normal course by the Telangana election commission, which the opposition parties alleged was at the behest of CM Chandrasekhar Rao to suit his electoral interests.
