Govt carrying out fencing, road work along international border: PC

''Three kilometres of fencing and five kms of road works were completed in August, 2010 under phase-II of the project. Seven kms of fencing was replaced in August, 2010 under phase III of the project. Poles for floodlighting were erected on a length of 30 kms during the month of August,'' Home Minister P Chidambaram said here on Wednesday briefing about development work along Indo-Bangladesh border.

On Indo-China border, 15.22 kms of road formation works and 2.36 kms of surfacing works were completed in August. "Formation and cutting works were completed for the Sugar Point-Lepcha Road (Himachal Pradesh) and the Bona-Gelling road (Arunachal Pradesh)," he told reporters here while presenting the August report card of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Chidambaram said Rs 23.54 crore was released to left wing extremism affected states to fight with the menace and carry out development work.

"Unified Commands have been created in the states of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Orissa and West Bengal," he said.

The Government has sanctioned 12,000 additional posts of Special police officers (SPOs) for five Naxal-hit states.

A highest of 3,000 each posts were sanctioned for Chhattisgarh, Orissa and Jharkhand and 1,500 each in Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra, he said.

"On August 10, 2010, a committee was constituted to examine various issues related to Chakmas or Hajongs, which include their settlement in Arunachal Pradesh and grant of Indian citizenship to eligible members," he said briefing works done for the Northeastern states.

A tripartite agreement was signed with a Meitei outfit in Manipur, the Kangleipak Communist Party (Military Council) -- Lallumba faction on August 6. "As a result, 114 cadres surrendered with 81 weapons. Measures are being taken to rehabilitate all surrendered cadres," he said.
The Government released about Rs 212 crore to different states under Modernisation of Police Forces scheme during the month.

Besides, 553 posts were sanctioned to the CISF for protection of different vital installations. A total of 120 posts were sanctioned for Jabalpur airport, 119 for Andaman & Nicobar port, 287 for Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer Limited (BCPL) Assam and 27 for Ordnance Workshop in Chennai, he said.

He said 6,000 rescue personnel including NDRF and ITBP men were deployed to handle the aftermath of the cloudburst in Leh in early August.

"More than 8,000 persons were evacuated. 400 tonnes of relief material, 800 tents, 6,900 blankets, 620 tarpaulins, 1,000 mattresses, food packets, bottled water and chlorine tablets were provided," the Home Minister said.

"Data collection for house listing and housing census and for the National Population Register was completed in all states and Union Territories except Jammu and Kashmir and a few areas of Chhattisgarh, Manipur and West Bengal," he said.

"NPR for the coastal areas was completed in 3,331 coastal villages of nine maritime states and four UTs. Biographical details of approximately 120 lakh persons and biometric details of about 69 lakh persons were collected," Chidambaram added.
