The public can now expect that their works in transport department will be hassle free including getting driving licences, vehicle registration and national permit as the Centre’s proposed Road Transport and Safety Bill will streamline the existing cumbersome system.

As per the proposal, a person can apply for driving licence online by attaching address proof on a common website from any part of the country.

Based on applicant’s choice, he or she will be called for testing which is totally automated. After passing the test, the applicant will be provided with a licence containing unique number. Even if a person applies for licences for different types of vehicles like heavy vehicles or renewal, his licence number will remain the same.

All driving licence holders details will be stored in a centralised database which can be accessible in any part of the country by all authorities concerned, including courts, tribunals and law enforcement authorities. Even if a person possesses a driving licence in one place and has shifted to another place, updates can be done from the new address.

The drivers biometric will be collected to prevent one person from collecting multiple licences.
