India on Monday summoned Sri Lankan High Commissioner Sudharshan Seneviratne to convey its displeasure over an article with objectionable content and illustration posted on the Sri Lankan defence ministry's website with derogatory reference to  Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalitha.

The action by the Ministry of External Affairs follows a strong condemnation by the External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj in the Rajya Sabha.

“It is a serious matter. India condemns this act. We will summon the High Commissioner of Sri Lanka and convey this to him,” Swaraj said in the Upper House after members from AIADMK demanded strong action from the government.

Seneviratne met a joint secretary (Sri Lanka, Maldives and Indian Ocean Region) who conveyed the government's feeling, official sources said.
