Ahmedabad: Six persons were killed after a cargo ropeway, carrying construction materials, broke down at the renowned Pavagadh hill temple in Panchmahal district on Saturday. Police said that the ropeway was carrying construction materials of the under construction temples at the hilltop.

Panchmahal district superintendent of police Haresh Dudhat confirmed to DH that six persons were killed in the accident. "The bodies have been sent for post mortem and an investigation has been initiated to find out the reason behind the accident," Dudhat said.

According to district officials among the deceased are two lift operators, two workers and two others whose identification process is going on. The Mahakali Mata temple, worshiped as one of the 51 sacred "Shaktipeeths, is located on the top of the Pavagadh hill. The temple for the past two years is undergoing redevelopment.

The temple is situated at a height of around 800 meters, where pilgrims can reach either by climbing about 2000 steps or ropeway known as "Udan Khatola." This passengers ropeway was shut for the public due to bad weather.
